Flintshire’s Lost Industrial Trail
A full-day or multi‑day exploration of abandoned industry, forgotten villages, and overgrown ruins.
This trail is arranged in a logical driving order with short walks at each stop. You can do it all in one ambitious day, or break it into themed sections.
1. Greenfield Valley – The Industrial Ruins Zone
Theme: mills, railways, overgrown buildings
Atmosphere: moss, water, stone, silence
Start at the lower end of Greenfield Valley, away from the museum area. This is where the real ruins hide:
• collapsed mill buildings
• ivy‑choked walls
• old water channels
• abandoned railway cuttings
It’s one of the densest clusters of industrial archaeology in North Wales.
Best moment: early morning mist drifting through the ruins.
2. Greenfield Dock – The Forgotten Port
Theme: maritime decay
Atmosphere: tidal mud, rust, solitude
Just a few minutes away, Greenfield Dock feels like a place time forgot.
• crumbling stone quays
• rusted metalwork
• marshland slowly swallowing everything
It’s a perfect contrast to the valley’s inland ruins.
3. Bettisfield Colliery Remains – Bagillt
Theme: coal industry ghosts
Atmosphere: quiet, scattered, melancholic
Little remains of the colliery, but what’s left is haunting:
• brick foundations
• fragments of machinery
• overgrown paths where the pit once dominated the landscape
It’s a subtle site, but powerful if you enjoy piecing together the past.
4. The Duke of Lancaster “Ghost Ship” – Llanerch‑y‑Môr
Theme: industrial surrealism
Atmosphere: eerie, cinematic, iconic
A rusting passenger liner stranded on the Dee Estuary since the 1980s.
• huge street‑art murals
• fenced off but fully visible
• one of the most striking abandoned structures in Wales
It’s the centrepiece of the trail.
5. Point of Ayr Colliery & Talacre Dunes
Theme: coal, rail, wartime relics
Atmosphere: windswept, sandy, half‑buried
The colliery is gone, but the land still whispers:
• concrete bases
• old rail alignments
• WWII pillboxes hidden in the dunes
The mix of industrial and military decay is unique.
6. Halkyn Mountain – Lead Mining Ruins
Theme: ancient industry
Atmosphere: wild, open, scattered ruins
This is the largest “lost industry” zone in Flintshire.
Expect:
• engine‑house ruins
• collapsed shafts
• stone buildings reclaimed by gorse
• abandoned farmsteads from the mining era
It feels like a post‑industrial wilderness.
7. Llong Quarry Village Remnants (near Mold)
Theme: forgotten settlement
Atmosphere: rural, hidden, overgrown
Around the old quarries near Llong are:
• ruined workers’ cottages
• overgrown tracks
• stone structures fading into the landscape
It’s not marked on maps — a true “if you know, you know” location.
8. Rhydymwyn Valley Works – The Secret Wartime Site
Theme: WWII secrecy
Atmosphere: quiet, eerie, historically heavy
The valley hides the remains of the M.S. Factory, once used for chemical weapons research.
• abandoned admin buildings
• foundations in the woods
• a strange, still atmosphere
Guided tours are available for the deeper areas, but the valley itself is atmospheric even from public paths.
🧭 Suggested Route Order
Greenfield Valley → Greenfield Dock → Bagillt → Duke of Lancaster → Talacre → Halkyn Mountain → Llong → Rhydymwyn
This creates a loop that gradually builds from small ruins to the most dramatic landscapes.
